Science V Religion

The Science V Religion debate has been around for eons. Both have their supporters and detractors. If I were ill, I would certainly consult a doctor, trusting in the science of his profession. However, that is not to say that I follow scientific theories blindly. After all, they are only theories.

Much of the debate concerns evolution v creation. Both defy logic. Evolution basically involves a fish that crawls up onto the land, and is fortunate enough the meet another crawling fish. They mate and have a baby monkey who grows up to meet another monkey. They in turn breed and yet another step is taken along the evolutionary path towards are present existence.
Creationists believe all things were made by God. Differing religions have different theories on how their own version of the supreme being went about his business. Then there are always those that like to combine the two and throw aliens into the mix just to complicate matters.
Personally, I tend to side with religion. Not because it is any more logical, but because I'm lazy. The seeds were planted back during my school days. Science lessons involved potions, compounds, periodic tables, complicated Latin names and difficult equations. Where as Religious Studies, Divinity or Ethics as it is frequently referred to today, was usually taught by a wet liberal that told stories and rarely sought retribution for neglected homework.
Probably the best option would have been to side with Physical Education. A good healthy sports obsession can eliminate the need to even consider such complex ethical questions.

  1. Americans also tend to believe in guardian angels, bigfoot and their right to inflict their own moral judgement on the rest of the world.

  4. I study science so can't side with religion. I believe there is a definite need for religion. it helps people deal with death, gives people hope of reuniting with a loved one after life.
Personally I enjoy learning about deep space and seeing just how small the human race is on the grand scale. the human race is lazy and in my opinion undeserved of a "God" figure.

  8. We were taught Divinity by a vicar. He resigned after accusations were made against him. He was never charged with anything.

  11. So its a crazy World most people imagine a being lives in the sky and has the need to die for everyone i.e Jesus. But what about the other thousands of god in this great popularity contest? Personally I no longer believe in a creator god but rather rely on science to explain things...the World is truly amazing and our life here is unique al the more reason to cherish every minute!

    1. The trouble is that science is unable to explain everything.

    2. by the same token, the trouble with religion is that it is unable to explain everything and uses ancient writings (with no evidence of proof) to suggest to the believers that the 'word' is true....
Sorry, I'm agnostic and believe in 'reason and purpose'. Religion was rammed down my throat - NO not by a nawty vicar!!! - from an early age and I 'rejected' it in my late teens...
If people are happy with it - and believing everything they are 'taught' in religion without questioning what they are told... as many are - then that is fine... but it's not for me..
ramming things down throats though... that's another story ;) xx

  12. Much of science, particularly that involving evolution is reliant on as much faith as religion. It's little more than an educated guess.

    1. Nah! There is no such thing as disbelief in evolution; you either understand it or you don't. Clearly the latter in this case.

  13. I am agnostic so I will always fall on the science side. The priest that taught my religion class in 2nd grade must have hated me. I was that kid that embodied the phrase question everything. Oh and I did from the back of the class with my hand up shouting ew ew ew ew ew Why??

  14. I try to put my faith in science, but I know deep down that the universe holds mysteries way beyond human comprehension.
